Monte Cook along with Monte Cook Are Teaching Sessions at Dungeon Master University

Since 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been hosting immersive events where professional dungeon masters lead D&D games in historic castles in England and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among career game masters who seldom have the opportunity to participate as players themselves, and they often look for guidance from the pros on topics ranging from improv and crafting riddles to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the coordinators began crafting a systematic approach to tackle these topics, which led to the creation of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“It's possible to view numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and learn quite a lot, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction together with peers in game mastering, where there’s live engagement with faculty instructors and your fellow DMs who are probably in comparable situations and seek to improve their skills,” stated the program's dean.

Workshop Options and Cost Levels

Game masters can choose from options ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to $2,500, based on the degree of interaction they desire with the experts. The starting package includes one of four courses:

  • Core Techniques: Covers the basics of managing a session.
  • Campaign Building: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
  • Worldbuilding: Concentrates on the crafting of environments.
  • Industry Advancement: Designed for game masters who want to learn more about the tabletop profession.

Each course includes eight hours of classwork split over two days.

“The classes are designed so that you leave with usable skills, probably greater confidence, and many practical techniques,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they go beyond recorded content. These classes that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then go right back home the next week and apply in your home campaign.”

Expert Instructors

Many sessions are instructed by two professors. Setting design is taught by an industry veteran and a renowned campaign designer, both teaching the skill of universe design.

Industry advancement features multiple instructors, such as an author on gaming puzzles, a podcast co-host, and a pioneering DM. The additional faculty is intended to deliver focused advice to participants with definite objectives.

“Various attendees aim to start their own D&D actual play and display their adventures with the world, some of them aim to release and write original content,” Carl explained. “Some just want to ask, What's the path to be a DM at something like a castle event? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Premium Packages

A $1.5K gold tier offers access to a introductory event, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with an instructor. This marks the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run Castle Days during breaks between campaigns at their castle events.

“One could practically host an full two days just on office hours for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – I believe the structured learning and the practical exercises is extremely important – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”

The $2,500 platinum tier includes an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then give comments and guidance.

“The aim is for the faculty member to review whatever the DM is concerned with: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. May I present a situation for you and get feedback on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl explained. “Alternatively they want to receive input and guidance on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”

Next Steps

Responses from the debut workshop will help determine upcoming academy workshops. Carl said that likely modifications could include expanding one-on-one sessions, lengthening the event to a longer period, or testing alternative workshop formats.

“I expect that we host such events frequently,” Carl stated. “I truly hope to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in different cities, and in various nations. The reception has been extremely positive. We’re very happy with what we’re seeing and I think it would be fantastic to be able to conduct this in collaboration with big conventions.”
