Fireworks along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Agreement to Return Captives
The declaration of an agreement projected to result in the freeing captives held in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has caused delight and comfort throughout Israel.
A group which has campaigned for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Jubilant scenes took place in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music beneath American and Israeli banners—one woman holding up a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, cried while observing the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she said. “We need to see their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv following the news.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “L’chaim”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, and her body recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in advocating for an agreement that brings the return of all those still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He said he was “shattered” that Carmel would not be among those returning to their homes but was “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the captives who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and all he has done for us. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than ever,” she said.
However, she warned that it was still too early to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we won’t open the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur up to the final instant which is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
