Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the fall internationals, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will head to the US as "backup".
After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.
Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.
Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper does not regain full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
