2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming looks especially powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
